Detroit Tigers Announcer Jay Allen Dies After Battle With Cancer

Allen, who had a lifelong dream of announcing at Comerica Park, was 60 years old.

MICHIGAN — Detroit Tigers public address announcer Jay Allen has died after a battle with cancer, according to the family who announced his death on Facebook Friday morning. He was 60.

Jay Allen, who became the PA announcer in 2019, was diagnosed with stage 4 bile duct cancer during a recent annual physical.

Allen was a Holland native who moved to Grand Rapids. He became the public address announcer for the Grand Rapids Hoops in 1993 and filled the same role for the West Michigan Whitecaps briefly in the mid-1990s and for the entire 12-year run of the Grand Rapids Rampage, WOOD-TV reported.
