Here’s How The Road Infrastructure In MI Ranks Nationally

A new report ranked the 50 states based on quality of infrastructure. See where Michigan finished.

MICHIGAN — It’s one of the few topics Democrats and Republicans can agree upon: America’s roads need a major overhaul.

QuoteWizard Insurance, a nationwide car insurance company, recently released a report on the states with the best and worst road infrastructure in the United States.

The report was based on data from the Federal Highway Administration. Each state received a cumulative score based on its percentage of roads in poor condition, annual cost per driver from roads in need of repair and percentage of structurally deficient bridges.

The states were then ranked — with first being worst, and 50th being best.

Our state ranks No. 14 overall in road infrastructure in the United States.

  • Percentage of roads in poor condition: 24
  • Cost per motorist: $645
  • Percentage of structurally deficient bridges: 10
  • Percentage of spending on road repairs: 54

The Federal Highway Administration has estimated that 61 percent of the country’s highways are in fair to poor condition, QuoteWizard noted in a press release, adding that Transportation for America, a national advocacy organization, has estimated it would cost $231 billion a year to keep our existing road network in good shape.

Rhode Island earned the jarring distinction of worst overall road infrastructure in the country, with a whopping 53 percent of its roads in poor condition. Oklahoma, West Virginia, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania rounded out the five worst states.
