Michigan Couple Dies Trying To Save Pets From Burning Home

The northern Michigan couple re-entered their burning home in attempts to save their pets, which included two dogs and a cat, reports say.

MICHIGAN — A northern Michigan couple was killed while trying to rescue their pets from their home during a house fire this week, according to reports.

The Kalkaska couple's house broke into flames just after midnight Thursday morning and initial emergency calls reported that both occupants of the house made it outside safely, WPBN reported.

But the couple, identified as Brian William Curry, 56, and Sheryl Renee Curry, 56, reportedly re-entered the home to try to save their pets before rescue crews arrived, police told WPBN. The couple could not be retrieved in time, reports said.

The couple reportedly had two dogs, a cat, miniature horses and goats.

"It's very unfortunate that they went back in but people love their animals and kids and some equate both as being the same thing so it's hard to judge," Kalkaska Township Fire Chief Derek Hogerheide told WPBN. "I know they're animal lovers, they're good people so it's very unfortunate we had them out and they made that decision to go back in."
