Michigan's Most Expensive Zip Codes Ranked
Here are the most expensive rental markets around the state. Can you guess which cities were included?
MICHIGAN — The most expensive zip code in Michigan is none other than Birmingham, according to a new report released.
RentCafe released data showing the most expensive ZIP codes for renters in every state, region and city across the country. The study uses the actual rent charged in apartment buildings with 50 or more rental units, located in over 130 U.S. markets, totaling approximately 15 million apartment units. The average rent prices are as of July 2019.
Other cities that made the top in Michigan include Ann Arbor, Detroit and some northern suburbs like Troy.

Here's what they determined in Michigan :
- After a 3% annual increase in rent, ZIP code 48009 in Birmingham takes the first spot in our top. For an apartment in the most expensive ZIP code in Michigan, one would have to pay $1,719/month.
- ZIP code 48322 in West Bloomfield is the runner up with an average rent of $1,633, while Detroit’s ZIP code 48226 comes third thanks to an average rent of $1,617.
- While every other city in our top registers a single entry, Ann Arbor takes spots 4 to 6 with these three ZIP codes: 48104, 48105, 48103.
- The highest annual increase in our top is that recorded in Detroit where rents went up 6.2%. At the opposite pole, ZIP code 48084 in Troy sees rents drop 1%
New York City and California grab the most spots in the top 50 as priciest places to live in the U.S.
Out of the 50 most expensive ZIP Codes, 28 are in New York City, with 26 in Manhattan and one each in Queens and Brooklyn. The ranking is completed by 18 California ZIP codes and 4 ZIP codes from Boston.
