Photo Exhibit Spotlights Life In Dearborn and Detroit
Check out these unique photographs from a local photographer documenting the lives of people in Dearborn and Detroit since the 1970s.

DEARBORN, MI — Dearborn’s award winning former City Photographer Bruce Harkness is the featured artist behind “Photographs from Detroit and Dearborn”, a new exhibition of work on display now through June 8 documenting various aspects of city life.
This selection of photographs taken between 1976 and 2003 are drawn from various series’ created by Harkness through his career including: The Cass Corridor, mid-1970s to mid-1980s; The 1981 Poletown Project which documented the eradication of a 465 acre Detroit-Hamtramck community to provide General Motors land on which to build a new assembly plant; The Urban Interiors Project, 1987-1990, a photographic and oral history study of home and business interiors on Detroit’s near east side; Detroit Blues Musicians, 1997, plus a number of photographs showcasing the old Dearborn City Hall and Mayor Michael A. Guido taken while Harkness was official photographer for the City of Dearborn from 1990 to 2010.
“Photographs from Detroit and Dearborn” is on display now through June 8 at The Rotunda Gallery of Dearborn’s Henry Ford Centennial Library, located at 16301 Michigan Ave. with a special, free presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Library Auditorium.

As an artist, Harkness is also a wealth of knowledge of every story behind each photograph and enjoys sharing these stories as he interacts with his audience. Now retired, Harkness was born in Brighton, Michigan in 1953 and earned a BFA in photography from Detroit’s Center for Creative Studies in 1979. In 1982 he earned his MFA in photography from Wayne State University. The DCAC is proud to assist in this exhibition and invites the public to come and experience the work of an exceptional photographer with fascinating stories to share.
