DETROIT, MI — During a recent visit to the DIA, seniors from Brookdale Assisted Living in Northville received a tour of the DIA’s unique 62,000-piece collection. The visit and tour were part of “Thursdays at the Museum,” a free program for adults 55 and older at the DIA.

“Programs like ‘Thursdays at the Museum’ are important to our seniors because it gives them the opportunity to engage with one another and the community,” said Shelby Combs, resident program coordinator at Brookdale Northville Senior Living. “Our seniors left the museum absolutely amazed because the DIA’s collection provides access to history and culture not found in books, on TV or on the internet.”

Every Thursday, seniors from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties visit the DIA to enjoy history, culture and art-making activities.

“We designed ‘Thursdays at the Museum’ to provide area seniors with unique and interactive opportunities to experience art and history from cultures across the globe,” said Salvador Salort-Pons, DIA director. “Activities like the guided tour the residents of Brookdale Senior Living enjoyed have helped make ‘Thursdays at the Museum’ one of our most popular free programs.”

“Thursdays at the Museum” offers special programs like film screenings, lectures, art-making and tours for adults age 55 and older, along with a complimentary cookie and coffee reception. The program is funded by the tri-county millage, which was passed in 2012 and provides free admission to residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and free bus transportation for any tri-county group of 25 or more.
