Police: 300 Cited on I-275, More Metro Detroit Speed Traps Ahead

This happened last weekend, and it’s going to be happening a lot more around Metro Detroit.

More than 300 traffic stops were made during an eight-hour shift on I-275 in Livonia on Thursday, July 9, Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said.

Another 200 motorists were given verbal warnings in what Shaw described to Hometownlife.com as an “ongoing traffic initiative” that will focus on different areas areound Metro Detroit.

Shaw said the I-275 area was selected for last week’s enforcement push after complaints about driver behavior on the freeway, speeding and a higher-than-normal accident rate. Drivers who were pulled over for speeding were going 10 or more miles over the legal limit, Shaw said.

“The lowest speed we stopped someone for was 83 mph,” Shaw said. “These aren’t five-over type of stops.”

Shaw said motorists should expect to see more state police troopers on freeways, including I-96 and even I-275 again.

“We’ll be looking at all the area freeways,” he said. “Motorists can definitely expect to see us again.”
