Ferndale Considers Medical Marijuana Facilities

A public hearing is set for Wednesday to discuss allowing just two facilities to operate to test the waters.

FERNDALE, MI — Ferndale is moving forward with a proposed ordinance that would allow two medical marijuana-related businesses to operate inside the city. A public hearing on the proposed ordinance change is set for 6:30 p.m. March 21 during the Planning Commission meeting inside City Hall, where the matter will be explored further.

So far, staff is recommending that the ordinance amendments allow one safety compliance facility and one provisioning center, according to Oakland County 115. This allows the city to consider any possible effects on public safety, parking and other concerns. At this time, growers, processors and secure transporters would not be allowed.

For the two facilities the city is looking into, there would be strict regulations. Such businesses would be confined to certain zones, would not be allowed within 500 feet of an educational institution, nursery or child care center, or another medical marijuana facility. House of the center would be restricted between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. These are only the beginning steps of the process, which includes approving the ordinance and accepting applications from facilities.
