Flint-area home health care agency recognized internationally

Ingraining corporate social responsibility into every decision earns finalist status in woman's award program for HOPE at Home Health Care

HOPE at Home Health Care was named a finalist in the category of Achievement in Women-related Corporate Social Responsibility in the 15th annual Stevie® Awards for Women in Business. The two other companies recognized as finalists in this category are from Oman and Turkey.

The companies will ultimately be recognized as Gold, Silver and Bronze Stevie Award winners at the annual Stevie awards event Nov. 16 in New York City. The international award program honors achievements and positive contributions of organizations and working professionals.

“Corporate social responsibility, or CSR, is ingrained into every business decision we make,” said Christine Bartel, HOPE at Home Health Care CEO. “Long-term success in the boardroom can only be sustained by success in doing what’s right for our patients, employees and communities we serve.”

In 2017, Bartel received the Stevie Award for Female Executive of the Year in Consumer Services for her leadership at HOPE, a full-service home health care agency serving patients in Southeast and Mid-Michigan with offices in Southfield and Grand Blanc.

Examples of HOPE’s CSR focus include the mantra of “no patient is turned away if we can improve their life,” and providing care in areas that other home care agencies won’t serve due to lack of insurance reimbursement, such as downtown Detroit. Nearly a quarter of the 1,000 people served by HOPE in 2017 were either underinsured or without insurance.

Other HOPE CSR practices include assigning social workers to all patients needing counseling or assistance, regardless of insurance, and an innovative compensation structure that transitions health care workers holding part-time jobs with multiple companies to full-time employment with HOPE.

Bartel believes so strongly in CSR, she established a foundation to assist patients with expenses, such as co-pays/deductibles and non-covered supplies, that would otherwise impede them from getting care they need.

“Our community benefits when individuals get medical care early,” Bartel said. “Early treatment can help avoid more expensive care in the future, which drains government programs like Medicaid.

“I’m hopeful that our success will inspire other businesses to recognize the long-term value in doing what’s right for the greater good.”

Proving that CSR can foster growth, not impede it, HOPE was named to the 2018 Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest growing private businesses. The company ranked No. 1908 on the Inc. 5000 list, posting a three-year sales growth of 235 percent.

More than 200 business professionals around the world served as judges to determine the finalists and winners of the 2018 awards.
