Virtual Art Talk And Sale To Benefit Women In Education At Mott Community College

Proceeds will go to benefit the Women in Education Fellowship and Crisis Funding activities.

The Mott Community College (MCC) Women In Education program will celebrate the arts at a virtual evening showcasing artist Gloria Watson on Thursday, June 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. Watson, a Flint native and African American folk artist, will share her home gallery and talk about her journey as a professional artist through a virtual tour. Jjenna Andrews, MCC Art Instructor, will emcee the livestreamed portion of the program where Watson will focus on 25 of her paintings that will be for sale.

The event offers participants an opportunity to purchase Watson’s art and pick up at a later date at the MCC Fine Arts Gallery in the Visual Arts and Design Center on the main campus in Flint. Proceeds will go to benefit the Women in Education Fellowship and Crisis Funding activities.

Watson is a self-taught artist who has developed her artistic ability as she has experienced life. Her art depicts the African American experience, drawing heavily from folklore and storytelling.

A longtime partner and WIE committee member, Watson said “I hope this virtual event will offer an evening of fun and unity while supporting the WIE program and its recipients during this time of COVID-19.” Watson first became involved with the WIE program as the representative from Salvation Army to the advisory group.

The Women in Education (WIE) program at MCC provides non-academic support to women students to enable them to continue their education without interruption due to financial or personal crisis. The program offers non-traditional financial support, personal and professional guidance, and mentoring.
