$25K in Jewelry Reported Stolen in Grosse Pointe Farms

The following information is gathered from the Departments of Public Safety of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating the theft of $25,000 worth of jewelry from a Rose Terrace home in which the homeowner told police she believes a man she hired as a contractor is responsible. The 77-year-old woman reported the theft to police April 27 after the contractor showed back up to her house earlier than scheduled and she confronted him about the missing jewelry. The man left and she called police. The responding officer saw the man leaving but the woman did not report that he was leaving. The woman reported that she hired the man to do some updating projects in her house and he had done painting inside and outside April 25. After he left, she noticed the jewelry was missing. The jewelry included a pair of pearl earrings, a pair of diamond earrings and a diamond heart-shaped necklace--all of which are pieces of jewelry she wears every day. The jewelry is worth about $25,000. The contractor has been interviewed by detectives. He was issued a citation for driving on a suspended license and released pending further investigation, according to a report.  

SUV Stolen in Front of Owner

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating the theft of a black Ford Explorer from the driveway of a Handy Road home Aprill 22. The SUV's owner witnessed the crime and called police while it was happening. Responding officer found the car and pursued it for a short time but stopped after the vehicle picked up speed and ran a stop sign at Grosse Pointe Boulevard and Moross Road. The thief also rummaged through another car at the home, leaving its door open. A red Kia Optima stolen out of Hazel Park was left at the scene of the stolen SUV, according to a report.

Stolen Rental Car Impounded

Grosse Pointe Farms police impounded a rental car April 29 shortly after midnight near Mack and Warren. The car had been reported stolen by Hertz Rental company and during patrol, an officer spotted the vehicle on Mack Avenue. The driver was not the man who rented the car but his father and the man said it was not stolen. The vehicle had been rented in 2012 and was supposed to have been returned in January 2013. The man who rented the car reviewed his credit card statements to find that the rental company charged him $2,000 the same day it filed the stolen police report, according to a report.

Drunk Driver Arrested

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 35-year-old Grosse Pointe Park man April 23 shortly before 2 a.m. near Moran and Ridge roads. The man was driving a hatchback vehicle with the hatchback open because a bicycle was in the back. The license plate was not in full view and the bicycle interferred with the driver's view. An officer stopped the vehicle near Moran and Ridge. When he approached, he smelled alcohol on the driver, who admitted to drinking one beer. The man failed field sobriety tests and then declined to complete any more tests. He also declined to take the formal breath test after contacting hi attorney. A warrant was obtained from the judge and blood samples were taken at a local hospital. He was initially charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and for refusing to take the portable breath test, according to a report.
