3 Arrested Near Pier Park from Fleeing Semi

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested 3 men Tuesday night outside Pier Park from a stolen semi-truck that side-swiped cars at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial.

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested three men Tuesday night on Lake Shore Road after a short pursuit of a stolen semi-truck driven from the Grosse Pointe War Memorial to in front of Pier Park.

Farms police received a 911 call from the Grosse Pointe War Memorial shortly after 7 p.m. about a semi-truck that was driving through the parking lot hitting several cars, Public Safety Director Dan Jensen said.

Responding officers attempted to stop the semi-truck, which they discovered had been reported stolen out of Fraser, but the driver continued driving, Jensen said. The truck drove between Grosse Pointe Memorial Church and the Grosse Pointe Club, striking parked cars there as well, Jensen said.

Then the semi-truck continued onto Lake Shore Road heading north and finally came to stop in front of Pier Park. Officers used spotlights to light up cab of the truck, where they could see two men inside, Jensen said.

Ordered out of the cab, the men cooperated and got out. They were arrested there and a third man, who had run from the semi-truck was also arrested nearby, Jensen said.

The men, all from Detroit, are being held in Grosse Pointe Farms. Charges are being considered and the ACTION Team, which concentrates on preventing and investigating stolen vehicles, will be interviewing the men today, Jensen said.

The fact that a semi-truck was stolen is unusual, Jensen said, explaining why the ACTION Team wants to talk to the men. After that interview, more decisions will be made about exact charges with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, he said.

No one was injured during the short, low-speed pursuit, Jensen said, explaining it was not really a pursuit in the sense that most people think of. Part of the reason cars were hit by the semi-truck, Jensen said, is that the man driving didn't know how to drive it.
