3-part Seminar: 'Ulysses' by Irish Novelist, Poet James Joyce

The Friends of the are pleased to offer a three-session, discussion-based seminar on James Joyce’s Ulysses. Dr. John Whittier-Ferguson will present an in-depth commentary on this work and the life of James Joyce. Participants are invited to enter into discussion with Dr. Whittier-Ferguson, an engaging and knowledgeable University of Michigan professor.

The series will discuss

• chapters 1-10 on Thursday, October 13
• chapters 11-15 on Thursday, October 20
• chapters 16-18 on Thursday, October 27

 
Each Session will be held from 7 to 9:00 p.m. in the Program Room of the Grosse Pointe Woods Branch Library, 20680 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. The price for the seminar series is $40, which may be paid at the door.
 
Recommended, prior to reading Ulysses, are A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Dubliners, but those unable to read the works prior to the seminar will also be enriched by these stimulating discussions. Dr. Whittier-Ferguson encourages participants to discuss the complexities of Joyce’s writing and to bring questions, ideas and notes to the sessions.

John Whittier-Ferguson, Ph.D. is associate professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His teaching and research interests include European and American modernisms, writing and war in the twentieth century, modernism and memory, and pedagogy. He is the author of Framing Pieces: Designs of the Gloss in Joyce, Woolf, and Pound (Oxford: OUP, 1996) and many articles in scholarly journals, including "The Liberation of Gertrude Stein: War and Writing," Modernism/Modernity 8 (2001) 405-28, and “A.J. Liebling's World War II Writings,” Michigan War Review, 2009. He is also the editor of James Joyce, Poems and Shorter Writings (London: Faber & Faber, 1991; rpt. 2001), and is currently working on a book about late Modernism and World War II.
