Explosion Rocks Grosse Pointe Woods

An explosion knocked off a manhole cover, but didn't cause any injuries.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS, MI — An underground explosion blew a manhole cover off near the intersection of Mack Avenue and Bournemouth Road in Grosse Pointe Woods this afternoon. An exact cause of the explosion hasn’t been determined and no injuries resulted from the incident, according to a Detroit News report.

The Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Department closed a portion of Mack as a result of the explosion between Moross and Cook roads, CBS Detroit reported. DTE Energy and fire crews were still on the scene as of 4 p.m.

The Detroit News reported that the explosion may have been electrical in nature. If so, it’s not the first utility-related issue for Grosse Pointe Woods this year.
