Grosse Pointe City Study Shows Pump Shutdown Caused Sewer Backup

Perfect storm of mishaps occurred during record rainfall storm in August.

(Posted Nov. 16, 2016) GROSSE POINTE CITY, MI — Storm sewer pump failures during an Aug. 16, 2016, downpour caused basement flooding in about 200 Grosse Pointe homes, city engineers have determined. City engineers said the equipment failure, coupled with heavy rainfall in a short amount of time was an "extremely rare" occurrence, and new protocols are being developed, including staffing pump stations during significant weather events to monitor the automatic system, are in the works, The Grosse Pointe Times reported.
