Grosse Pointe Farms Clarifies Tax Question
Prepaying 2018 Summer Property Tax Not Possible, Per City Attorneys, IRS

While Grosse Pointe Farms is accepting property taxes for 2017, and will take payments due Feb 14 any time between now and that due date, in the wake of the newly-passed federal tax bill, residents are wondering if they might gain advantage by paying their property tax for 2018 now. In a statement, the Grosse Pointe Farms city manager’s office said that taxes not yet billed cannot be paid.
“In response to inquiries from many citizens about pre-payment of 2018 property taxes we sought guidance from our city attorneys and accountants,” the statement reads. “As a result, we were informed that while we can accept payment of the tax bill already issued and currently due no later than February 14, 2018, we cannot accept estimated payments for the summer tax bills as they have not been calculated or billed.”
The city also contacted the IRS for clarification, and confirmed that the policy was correct. “On December 27, the IRS issued a memorandum that confirms the advice we received. While we always seek to benefit our citizens whenever possible, the IRS has confirmed we cannot do so in this instance,” the city manager’s office said.
