Grosse Pointe Public Safety Report Says Crime Was Up In 2017

After years of decline, the City of Grosse Pointe has had a rise in crime rates in 2017, according to the annual Public Safety Report.

Grosse Pointe’s annual Public Safety Report, presented to city council Feb. 12, showed an uptick in crime, arrests, calls for service and fire calls in 2017. According to the report, crime went up 27 percent between 2016 and 2017, with 278 crimes reported in 2017, total. While Part I Index crimes, those the FBI deems most serious, reached record low numbers, the rise in identity thefts, especially those related to an ongoing rash of fraudulent unemployment claims made without the claimants’ awareness, have increased dramatically, officials said.

Stephen Poloni, Grosse Pointe’s director of public safety, attributes the increases mainly to identity theft and fraud. “One of the biggest things that you see is an increase that we anticipate will increase even more this year, is identity theft and fraud,” Poloni told the Grosse Pointe News.
