Grosse Pointe Woods PTO Treasurer Accused Of Embezzlement: Worthy
Prosecutors said the former treasurer of the Monteith School Parent Teacher Organization of stealing money from the group.
GROSSE POINTE, MI — The former treasurer of the Monteith School Parent Teacher Organization is accused by Wayne County prosecutors of stealing money from the PTO as well as taking funds from the Grosse Pointe School District's Millage Committee for Renewal.
Prosecutors said they have charged Quinn Keith Smith, of Grosse Pointe Woods, with embezzling between $50,000 and $100,000 in one case. In another, Smith is charged with embezzling betweeen $1,000 and $20,000. Smith, 43, was arraigned Tuesday morning before Judge Theodore A. Metry.
According to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Smith was the treasurer of the Monteith School Parent Teacher Organization between July 2017 and January 2020. An audit of the organization's finances revealed the unauthorized withdrawal of funds, prosecutors said. In February, prosecutors said, a report was filed with Grosse Pointe Woods police alleging that Smith accessed the account without authorization and took more than $91,000 over 2 1/2 years.

In a separate case, prosecutors said Smith took over $1,000 from the GPPSS Millage Committee for Renewal fund between October 2019 and January 2020.
The next court hearing is a probable cause conference scheduled for June 24. Preliminary examination is scheduled for July 15.

Prosecutors said bail was set at $25,000.
