Jane Bashara Case To Be Featured On Episode Of Dateline NBC

Nine years have passed since the murder of Jane Bashara of Grosse Pointe. On Friday, the case will be revisited by Dateline NBC.

GROSSE POINTE, MI — The murder of Jane Bashara, a Grosse Pointe woman who was killed by a handyman hired by her husband, will be the subject of an episode of the NBC show Dateline Friday.

The episode, titled “Sex, Lies & Murder," will air at 9 p.m. and will include interviews with the co-lead investigator on the case, Detective Mike Narduzzi, as well as interviews with Steve Tibaudo and Judge Vonda Evans.

“When Jane Bashara is found dead in her SUV, the investigation into her murder reveals a tangled web of sex and lies,” Dateline said in a synopsis of the episode. “The two-hour broadcast also features the informant who helped the FBI expose a hit-for-hire plot in the case, all caught on tape, speaking out for the first time.”

Bashara was 56 when she was murdered. Her body was found in her Mercedes-Benz SUV, parked in an alley on Detroit's east side.

Joseph Gentz, now 57, a handyman from St. Clair Shores, eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for strangling Bashara in her garage. He told police he accepted $2,000 from Bashara's husband, Bob Bashara, to kill Jane. He is currently serving a 17- to a 25-year prison sentence for the crime.

Bob Bashara was convicted following a trial and sentenced to life in prison without the opportunity for parole for first-degree, premeditated murder. He died in prison in August 2020 at 62.

Bashara had his wife killed for her life insurance money, according to reports from the time.
