Moms Talk: Valentine's Day
Grosse Pointe moms weigh in on the evolution of Valentine's Day from their generation to their children's generation.

Today is the first of a weekly feature on Grosse Pointe Patch intended to reach out to the parents within the community.
We intend to have open discussions about current issues confronting Grosse Pointe parents and a Moms Council is in place to answer questions and weigh in on topics.
Our 10-member council includes moms from a variety of backgrounds: stay-at-home, work-from-home, work-out-of-the-house, adoptive, single-child, many children, young and old children and even a labor and delivery nurse who specializes in health care initiatives for first-time parents. And, one Dad!

Each week we will feature a topic for discussion. You can ask questions, provide your opinion and even answer questions of other parents.
This week's topic is Valentine's Day: Is more really better for kids?

One of our moms on the council, Jen Evans said this exact topic recently surfaced in her house and described the current Valentine's Day practices for children as a competition of who can bring the best of the best for other students.
Evans remembers making cereal boxes into "mailboxes" when she was in school and the biggest part of the celebration was handing out valentine cards to fellow students.
What do you think about Valentine's Day celebrations for kids?
