Pierce Students Among Regional Scholastic Writing Award Winners

​Seventh and eighth graders from Pierce Middle School earn 32 regional awards in the 2018 Scholastic Art and Writing competition.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, a program to honor writing by teens, is celebrating its 95th year in 2018, and seven students from Grosse Pointe’s Pierce Middle School earned recognition in this year’s contest. have been awarded for 94 years to the creative teens around the country. This year’s submissions by Pierce students earned 32 writing awards at the regional level, a group that counts schools in Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana, according to the school.

Entries in the Midwest Region are judged by the Belin Blank Center for Gifted Education at the University of Iowa. Pierce students earned seven Gold Key Awards, ten Silver Key Awards and fifteen honorable mentions at the regional level. Eigth graders Lilly Geer, Elizabeth Klepp, Grace Lowell, Svea Swanson, Juliana Tague, Igor Trifunovic, and seventh grader Camille O’Mara are among regional honorees whose Gold Key submissions will advance to the judging for the next round in New York City, where the winners will be announced on March 13th.

The students prepared their entires with help from members of the Pierce English Department, including Susan Quinn, Geneva Scully, Kate Bezak, Jan Brengman, and Julie Lawrence. Noted winners of these annual awards have included Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, John Updike, Stephen King, Zac Posen, Bill Murray, Kurt Vonnegut and Lena Dunham.
