Police Blotter: House Party Broken Up, 13 with Alcohol in System

The following information is gathered from the Departments of Public Safety of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

Grosse Pointe Farms police broke up an underage drinking party at a house on Touraine Feb. 9 after receiving complaints about teenagers being inside consuming alcohol. Responding officers surrounded the house and then made contact with the 16-year-old daughter of the homeowner, who explained she had invited 9 friends to her house following a school dance but more people showed up. The homeowner gave police permission to search the house as long as they stayed to the south side entrance. The daughter rounded up all of the teens in the house, including some who were hiding in the attic. Police gave portable breath tests to all of the teenagers, 17 of whom did not have a blood alcohol content and 13 of whom had blood-alcohol contents ranging from 0.005 to 0.072. The legal limit for individuals 21 years old and older is 0.08  percent. Officers called the parents of those who had registered alcohol in their systems. They were sent home with parents and the case was passed along to detectives for further investigation. The responding officers saw open beer cans inside the house through windows and could smell marijuana outside of the garage. No one was found smoking marijuana. Many of the teenagers are from the Grosse Pointes but some were from St. Clair Shores, Harrison Township, Commerce Township and Shelby Township, according to report.

Third Drunk Driving Arrest Ends in Felony Charge

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 31-year-old woman Feb. 13 for felony drunken driving and destruction of property. A patrol officer spotted the woman make a right turn onto Moross Road from the center lane of Mack Avenue about 2:30 a.m. During the traffic stop, the woman smelled of alcohol and failed all field sobriety tests. She admitted to having one drink a few hours prior and was unsteady on her feet when officers asked her to step from her SUV. She became combative with officers during the traffic stop, threatening to spit on them and saying she wanted to kill them. She had a 0.14 percent blood alcohol content on a portable breath test at the scene of the stop. She refused to take the formal breath test at the police station but Judge Matthew Rumora signed a warrant for blood to be drawn. While being held at the Farms Public Safety Department, she tore the bedding mat inside the jail cell using her teeth. Officers had to remove the mat so it would not be a safety hazard to her and had to throw it away because prisoners would be able to hide items inside. The woman has two prior drunken driving convictions, making this arrest a felony count, according to a report.
