Police Blotter: Thefts, Drunken Driving and Begging

Grosse Pointe officers from all five of the Pointes are investigating a variety of crimes.

Two retailers in the Village reported having more than $550 in merchandise stolen from their stores Feb. 8. at 17014 Kercheval Ave. reported that six new necklaces placed on the sales floor that morning were all removed from the store. The display rack that they were hanging on was found near the back of the store on the floor. at 16910 Kercheval Ave. reported having $326 in jewelry and belts stolen during the same time frame on Feb. 8. Neither store had suspect information, according to police reports. 

In another theft in the Village, a New York woman reported Feb. 10 that her briefcase was stolen from her locked car parked in the rear lot of the Village between Notre Dame and St. Clair streets. The car did not have any damage, according to police. 

Drunk teen released to parent

Grosse Pointe Farms police who discovered an intoxicated 16-year-old Farms boy during a traffic stop of another teen driver released him to his mother. An officer stopped a vehicle in the 200 block of Muir Road Feb. 12 about 12:40 a.m. after the driver didn't immediately accelerate on a green traffic light. When the officer approached, he could smell alcohol. The driver said he hadn't been drinking and passed all field sobriety tests administered. His passenger, however, admitted to drinking during a school dance and told officers he had taken a portable breath test with Park officers before. The boy's blood alcohol content was 0.14 percent. An officer took him to the police station, called his mother and instructed her to pick him up. No citations were issued but the mother was told the case was being turned over to the juvenile officer of the department, according to police reports. 

Thefts reported at schools

A Grosse Pointe South teacher reported the theft of $47 cash from her purse. The teacher identified a student who knows the location of her purse and video surveillance tapes within the school showed the student checking the teacher's location before entering her classroom Feb. 8 while the room was empty. The teacher was in a copy room. The teacher told police the student had missed school and completed a make-up exam the week before the theft, during which she likely witnessed that teacher's specific storage location for her purse, according to reports. 

A University Liggett School student reported the theft of a laptop computer and an iPod Touch. The student told officers he was using his computer while waiting for someone to pick him up Feb. 11, tucked both items away in a carrying case and put them in spot between two rooms in the building. He then left the hallway for about 15 minutes and when he returned, both items were gone but the carrying case remained. The boy told police he didn't see anyone around in the hallway when he stored the items between the classrooms, according to reports. 

Harassment reported

A 49-year-old Grosse Pointe Park woman sought information from the City of Grosse Pointe police Feb. 9 about obtaining a personal protection order against her 57-year-old ex-husband, whom she reported entered her Fisher Road business yelling and pounding. His behavior is affecting business and she has filed two other complaints with police about the harassment, according to reports. 

Stolen SUV recovered 

A stolen 2008 Cadillac Escalade was recovered in the 900 block of Barrington Road Feb. 8. The SUV's tires were missing and damage indicated the vehicle was likely pushed to the location, according to Grosse Pointe Park police.

Begger sent away

A 38-year-old man who is known to Grosse Pointe Park police was sent away from Mack Avenue and Nottingham Road Sunday about 1:50 a.m. after he was spotted begging in the area, according to reports.

Drunken driver arrested

A 26-year-old Roseville man was arrested about 2:30 a.m. Sunday after running from the scene of a crash at Three Mile and Jefferson roads. The crash only involved his car, which struck a light pole. The car had to be towed from the scene and the man had a 0.20 percent blood alcohol content. The officers caught him a short time after he ran away, according to reports.

Fires stopped at sources

Grosse Pointe Park firefighters stopped a small fire that began in the oven of a home in the 1300 block of Auduobon Road on Feb. 12. The resident called after finding flames and smoke inside the oven. Crews turned off the power supply to the stove and cleared the smoke from the house, according to reports.

Grosse Pointe Shores firefighters removed a burning pile of clothes from a Willison Road home Feb. 10. When crews arrived, they found the homeowner inside at a table. She was unaware of the smoke alarm, the heavy smoke in the house or the fire, in part due to hearing loss. The firefighters removed her from the home and then removed a pile of burning clothes in a bathroom. Fans were used to clear the house of smoke. Firefighters determined the cause of the fire to be "careless smoking," according to reports. No injuries were reported.
