As Trial Begins, Macomb Man Admits Killing His Wife
Hal Byrom admitted killing his wife in their Macomb Township condo in 2016.

As his lawyer prepared to select jurors for trial, Hal Byrom interrupted proceedings, telling the judge he wanted to confess he’d shot his wife. Byrom, 46, told Judge Joseph Toia in Macomb County Circuit Court he wanted to spare his wife’s family and his own the trauma of a trial.
In 2016, Byron shot his wife, Ebony Byrom, 38, during a fight at their condo in Macomb Township. Ebony Brown captured the incident, as her call to 9-1-1 recorded the last minutes of her life. Shortly before her husband shot her nine times and then turned the gun on himself, injuring his neck and jaw, Ebony Brown told the 9-1-1 operator “He just needs to leave before it escalates.”
April 11, Byron will receive a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Had he proceeded with trial, he might have been convicted of second-degree murder, which comes with the possibility of parole.
