Your Local Kroger Is Collecting Food For Gleaners: What To Know

METRO DETROIT, MI — Kroger shoppers: it's that time of year again to help feed the hungry in Michigan.

The Kroger Co. of Michigan and Gleaners Community Food Bank invite Kroger customers to help feed hungry friends and neighbors by contributing non-perishable food items during Gleaners’ food collection weekends at 93 Kroger stores in Wayne, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Livingston counties this month.

The food collection events are part of The Kroger Co.’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan to end hunger in local communities and eliminate waste across the company by 2025.

On weekends from Jan. 11 – Feb. 2, Gleaners volunteers will greet shoppers inside Kroger store vestibules, distribute lists of needed nutritious foods and personal items, and collect customer donations on both Saturdays and Sundays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Gleaners asks customers to donate items in boxes, cans or plastic containers to prevent breakage during transport.

Food collection events are scheduled at select Kroger stores (see full list of stores below) in the following counties on the dates listed:

• Saturday, Jan. 11 and Sunday, Jan. 12 – Wayne County
• Saturday, Jan. 18 and Sunday, Jan. 19 – Macomb County
• Saturday, Jan. 25 and Sunday, Jan. 26 – Oakland County
• Saturday, Feb. 1 and Sunday, Feb. 2 – Livingston, Monroe and Wayne counties

“These food drives serve as the perfect opportunity to lend a hand to over 650,000 men, women and children who will face hunger this year in southeast Michigan,” said Rachel Hurst, corporate affairs manager, The Kroger Co. of Michigan. “Our Kroger customers are always such loyal supporters of our efforts to end hunger in our communities. Last year, this food drive resulted in over 87 tons of food donated to Gleaners, and we feel confident that, with the help of our customers, we will have yet another successful year in the fight against hunger.”

Gleaners requests nutritious items such as:

• Canned meats and fish
• Canned fruits and vegetables
• Hearty soups
• Dried whole grain pasta and rice
• Baby foods and formula
• Cereal, oatmeal and granola bars
• Peanut butter and/or jelly (in plastic jars)
• Pancake and baking mixes
• EnsureÒ and other nutritional supplement drinks
• Toothpaste and toothbrushes
• Diapers
• Soap and shampoo
• Other personal care items, including disposable razors

Customers may also make a donation at any register or select a pre-filled “From Hearts to Homes” box of groceries to add to their total at checkout for donation. Each item, monetary donation and “From Hearts to Homes” box donated brings hope and food to tables in the community.

“We are so grateful for this opportunity to team up with Kroger once again to continue to fight hunger in our communities,” said Gleaners President & CEO Gerry Brisson. “This food drive comes at such a critical time to keep the shelves stocked at many of our partner agencies as many Michigan residents face the heartbreaking decision to buy food or pay their bills.”

This marks the ninth year Kroger and Gleaners have held collection events in January to battle hunger. Last year, the five counties collected over 175,000 pounds – or 87 tons – of food for hungry neighbors through the Kroger and Gleaners collaboration.
