Petland in Novi sold sick animals, lawsuit claims

Nearly 20 people who bought pets from Petland in Novi say their animals were sick when purchased and some had to be euthanized.

NOVI, MI — Seventeen people say they were sold sick dogs from the Petland store at the Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, according to a lawsuit. They are suing the store for fraud, breach of contract and violations of the Michigan Consumer Protection Act, according to media reports. Some of the animals were found to have genetic diseases and be suffering from ailments like parasites, the lawsuit notes. Several of the animals had to be euthanized, the report says.

"Specifically, the dogs were not their stated ages, were sold in horrific condition including with intestinal parasites and worms, with genetic defects, infected with deadly and highly contagious disease (Parvo), dehydrated, malnourished and underweight," the lawsuit states, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Petland reportedly refused to replace the dogs or pay for veterinary care, according to the complaint and issued a statement saying they are “pet lovers” and make their care their “top priority.” Petland is independently owned and operated and has been in business for 22 years. A Petland official told The Detroit Free Press that they deny these “false allegations.”
