1 In Custody After 8-Year-Old Boy Shot, Killed In Canton Township

One person is in custody following the shooting death of an 8-year-old boy in Canton Township Tuesday night.

CANTON TWP., MI — One person is in police custody following the shooting death of an 8-year-old boy in Canton Township Tuesday, according to the Canton Public Safety Department.

Officials plan to turn their investigation over to the Wayne County prosecutor's office later Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the department.

The child, who has not been identified by police, died after being taken to an area hospital Tuesday, authorities said.

The 8-year-old boy was shot in Canton Tuesday afternoon after a gun was fired inside a home on Old Michigan Avenue, Canton Public Safety officials said in a news release.

The boy was shot around 4 p.m., authorities said. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, according to authorities. Police did not say if the shooting was accidental, although WDIV-TV reported that someone affiliated with the park the family lived in said the boy’s father was cleaning his gun when it accidentally went off.

Police have not confirmed those details, however.
