Canton Bans Consumer Fireworks Due to Heightened Fire Risk

The ban, which also affects bonfires and other recreational fires, will remain in effect until drought conditions ease.

Canton, MI — Public safety officials in Canton have doused consumer fireworks for the 4th of July holiday due to fire risks in the rain-thirsty area.

The ban is immediate, The Canton Observer reports.



“We’re very concerned about public safety during these dry times,” Public Safety Director Joshua Meier said after issuing an emergency order, effective 11 a.m. Thursday.

The ban will remain until “drought conditions” ease, and violators could face hundreds of dollars in fine.

Consumer-grade fireworks — legal in Michigan on the day before, the day of and the day after 10 federal holidays — are banned, as well as bonfires and other recreational.

Charcoal grills are considered less risky and are permitted for outdoor 4th of July barbecues, Meier said.
