Exciting Events For The Month Of May At The Canton Public Library
The Canton Library has great events for all ages throughout every month, and this is the list for May!

Family Storytimes
When: Mondays, 10:00-10:30 a.m.; Tuesdays, 7:00-7:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10:00-10:30 a.m.; Thursdays 10:00-10:30 a.m. and 7:00-7:30 p.m.; Saturdays 10:00-10:30 a.m.
Sessions end on May 18.
Details: Family Storytime allows caregivers to actively engage with their children under age 5. With a Youth Librarian, build early literacy skills through meaningful stories, songs, and play.

Preschool Storytime
When: Mondays, 10:00-10:30 a.m.; Fridays, 1:00-1:30 p.m. Sessions end May 17.

Details: Preschool storytimes feature longer books, flannel board and rhymes designed for children ages 3 1/2 - 5. Children must be able to sit independently and be attentive for 30 minutes. Parents may attend to help transition their child to this program. All parents must remain in the children's department. Registration required.
Baby Storytime
When: May 7, 14; 10:00-10:30 a.m.
Details: Designed for babies 18 months and younger with an adult, Baby Storytime features simple
stories, songs, and rhymes. Registration required.
ABC Activity Time
When: After every baby, preschool and family storytime; lasts 30 minutes
Details: Experience a variety of hands-on and imaginative play opportunities while building social and cooperative skills with other young children and caregivers.
ELL Conversation Groups
When: Thursdays and Fridays, 9:30-11:00 a.m.
Details: Practice speaking English in an informal setting with Community Literacy Council
volunteers.
Computer Skills Help for Beginners
When: Thursdays, 5:00-7:00 p.m.; Saturdays, 9:00-11:00 a.m.; Sundays, 3:30-5:30
Details: Every library computer has self-guided activities for practice with mouse skills,
copying/pasting and other computer basics. Experts are also on hand to help on designated days.
On the Spot Tech Help
When: Sundays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.; Thursdays, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Details: Tech savvy volunteers lend a hand with computer and smartphone problems that you just can’t figure out.
NHS Tutoring
When: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, 6:00-8:00 p.m.; Sundays, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Sessions ends May 23.
Details: NHS Students from PCCS’s The Park provide homework help for students in grades three
to 12.
ELL Reading Group
When: Fridays, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Details: Beginning or Intermediate English Language Learners are invited to read together and discuss short articles, etc., in English with a tutor.
Digital Download Drop-In Help
When: 10-11 a.m., Fridays
Details: Get one-on-one help from our Information Desk. Bring your device and, if you are a Kindle user, your Amazon login information.
Board Gaming League of Canton
When: First Saturday of each month, noon-5:45 p.m.
Details: Drop by to play some of the hottest games, sharpen your mental skills and meet new
folks.
Teddy Bear Tea Party
When: May 6, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Details: Bring your favorite stuffed animal and join us for stories, crafts, crafts and more. Ages
4-9, registration required.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Battle
When: May 8, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Details: We supply the cards; all you have to do is show up and play, whether you are brand new to
the game or seasoned player. Ages 11+.
Lunch and a Book
When: May 9, Noon-1:00 p.m.
Details: Bring your own lunch and discuss Stephen Mack Jones’ August Snow.
Advanced ELL Book Club
When: May 10, 24; Noon-1 p.m.
Details: Advanced English Language Learners read and discuss books in English.
Dungeons & Dragons Gaming Club
When: May 11, 2:00-3:30 p.m.
Details: Have fun while meeting and socializing with others who enjoy role-playing games. All playing materials provided, but feel free to bring your own dice or Fifth Edition Character Sheet. Ages 9 and up.
Moments with Mom
When: May 12, 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Details: Stop by our Children’s Library to snap a photo in a backdrop, play a game, make a craft
together or find a book to read with mom.
Starfish Family Services Early Literacy Workshops
When: Second Monday of each month, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Details: SFS provides free, high quality, early literacy training to day care providers, caregivers
and parents. They teach topics, this month’s being Building Relationships, developed by the independent non-profit HighScope Educational Research Foundation.
The American Songbook of Jazz with Paul VornHagen
When: May 14, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Details: Winner of six Detroit Music Awards, saxophonist/flutist and vocalist Paul VornHagen has
appeared at many well-known jazz festivals and nightclubs and has released numerous critically acclaimed recordings on Schoolkids and PKO Records labels. In this performance, he will be accompanied by keyboard, bass and drums.
Adult Writers’ Group
When: May 14, 28; 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Details: Interested in writing? Share your work, get feedback and discuss the craft of writing.
American Girl Club
When: May 15, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Details: Characters Tenney Grant and Saige Copeland are highlighted. Ages 8-12, registration required.
Imposter Art Make and Take
When: May 16, 4:00-5:30 p.m.
Details: Imitate an artist, copy some cubism, emulate an abstract, or just be your own best artist
self. All ages and abilities are welcome to replicate their favorite art style or create their own.
Library Board Meeting
When: May 16, 7:30-9:00 p.m.

Nonfiction Book Group
When: May 18, 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Details: Discuss Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Leadership: In Turbulent Times
First Tech Challenge Robotics Demo
When: May 18, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
Details: Meet the N.E.R.D. Bots #14353, a FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team from East Middle School. Participants will learn about the FIRST program and drive a robot while learning about the design process/programming behind it.
Chess Plus
When: May 18, 3:30-5:00 p.m.
Details: Play classic board games like chess, checkers and mancala. Ages 7 and up.
Count Me In! Special Needs Storytime
When: May 18, 4:00-4:30 p.m.
Details: This sensory-friendly storytime is filled with picture books, preschool songs and simple
sign language designed for patrons of all ages with special needs and their families.
Teen Boredom Busters
When: For five or 50 minutes, any time
Details: Students who need a brain break after school can learn something new, meet a friend,
relieve stress and have fun in our Teen Space with passive or planned activities, like a stress ball craft on May 20, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Adult Contemporary Book Discussion
When: May 20, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Details: Discuss Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng.
Open LEGO Build
When: May 23, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Details: Join us for creative play and building with our collection of Lego and Duplo Blocks. This
program is intended for kids 7-14. Siblings welcome.
Seniors Book Discussion
When: May 23, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
Details: Discuss Kindred by Octavia E. Butler.
Lit Lab Productions: Grow a Pizza
When: May 25, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
Details: Take part in our Lit Lab Production where participants build literacy skills through
talking, writing, singing and playing. For families with children ages 4-9. Registration required.

Details: Have you read Percy Jackson & the Olympians, seen the movies or want to know about

STEM Curiosity

Preschool STEAM

Details: Children ages 3-5 explore STEAM topics, this month by Discovering Ducks, through books
and hands-on activities. Sponsored by All Saints Catholic School. Registration is required.
Parenting the Montessori Way
When: May 31, 4:00-5:30 p.m.
Details: The aim of this program is to provide parents with the tools to prepare their environment to suit the needs of their child; teach parents how to set simple and workable ground rules so that their child can build concentration, confidence, coordination, independence and order; and create a positive and joyful parenting experience that helps children develop in all aspects of life. Presented by the staff at Banyan Montessori Academy.
