MSP Trooper Injured Pulling Man From Burning Vehicle

A Michigan State Police trooper suffered cuts on his hands while rescuing a man from a burning vehicle on I-94.

CANTON, MI — A Michigan State Police trooper suffered cuts on his hands after rescuing a man from a burning vehicle on I-94, near Haggerty, police said.

Police responded to the southeast Michigan highway around 6:15 a.m. when a vehicle towing a boat caught fire, according to Michigan State Police. When officers arrived, they found a 63-year-old man slumped over inside the vehicle, police said.

The trooper attempted to use his baton to break the passenger side window out, police said, but he was unable to do so due to the tint on the front windows. The officer used his hands to push the window down, cutting his hands, police said. He was then able to pull the driver from the truck, police said.

Paramedics arrived to the scene and were able to treat the man for low blood sugar, police said. The trooper was also treated at the scene, police said. The fire was caused by the driver having his foot on the gas, causing the tires to catch fire, police said.

The vehicle and boat were destroyed, police said. The driver was transported to a local hospital, police said.
