Natural Gas Smell In Plymouth Is Excessive Odorant, Not A Leak: Consumers Energy

Consumers Energy field more than 100 calls about the strong smell of gas early Thursday in Plymouth and Northville.

PLYMOUTH, MI — Consumers Energy is blaming the strong smell of natural gas in the city of Plymouth, Plymouth Township and Northville Township Thursday morning on an excess amount of odorant added to its system. The utility said it had received more than 100 calls about the smell, according to a Detroit News report.

The city of Plymouth sent out an alert via email at 7:20 Thursday morning informing residents of the situation. “This has been reportedly going on for some time during the overnight hours,” the email read. “Consumers Energy crews are responding at this time.”

"We think we added too much odorant to the system and that's what's leaking into the atmosphere and what's causing a lot of concern this morning," Consumers Energy spokesperson Debra Dodd said. "We think this is the problem, but if someone is smelling gas in other areas and they're still concerned, then they should call us."
To report a gas leak, call 911 or Consumers Energy at (800) 477-5050.
