NCAA Finals: Villanova Defeats Michigan, 79-62

The Wolverines looked good early, but by the second-half, the Wildcats took care of business.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – After a charmed March Madness run, Michigan finally met its match. A one-man wrecking crew named Donte DiVencenzo, who led the Villanova Wildcats past the Wolverines on Monday to win the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship, 79-62.

For Villanova, the Wildcats won its second championship in three years. And, for the city of Philadelphia, this championship comes just less than two months since the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl.

The Wildcats dominated this 2018 tournament, knocking off all its opponents by double-digit margins. And, as they had done to other rivals in this tournament, the Wildcats were on fire from beyond the 3-point arc, dropping in 10 of 27.

Although Michigan started strong in the first half, the Wolverines faded late in the first half. By the second half, Villanova took charge and dominated. DiVencenzo proved to be the man for 'Nova on Monday, with 31 points and six rebounds. DiVencenzo went 5 of 7 from beyond the 3-point arc.

For the Wolverines guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman led with 23 points. Moritz Wagner added 16 points and six rebounds.

The Wolverines came into the game hot and on a 14-game win streak. But, for the first time in this NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, they were the underdogs as a 3-seed. Just two days ago, the Wolverines were forced to play the villains, knocking off Sister Jean and her Loyola-Chicago Ramblers.
