Plymouth-Canton Grad Dies

Memorial contributions support a scholarship for the longtime art teacher.

A 1989 graduate of Plymouth-Canton High School and longtime art teacher at for Zeeland Public Schools in western Michigan has died.

Marnie Assink, 44, of Holland, died of natural causes Saturday morning, according to a report from WHTC.

After graduating from high school, she attended Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, graduating in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree. She earned her master’s degree from Grand Valley State University in Allendale.

Assink was also an adjunct instructor at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids.

Survivors include her husband, Dan, of 22 years; a son and daughter-in-law Jacob and Kiona Assink; her parents, Lee and Kay Smith of Midland; and two sisters: Kalee Lint of Cortland, OH, Amy (Marcus) de La Merced of Northville.A full obituary and additional survivors are found on the Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home website.

Visitation is from 1-3 and 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the funeral home, located at 315 E. 16th St., Holland. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Community Reformed Church, 10376 Felch St., Zeeland.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area in Assink’s name. A scholarship will be established in her name for Zeeland Public Schools art students.
