Suspect In Canton Carjacking, Shooting Spree Identified
The accused man was involved in a pair of carjackings late Tuesday in Canton

DETROIT, MI – Michigan State Police have identified the man who died after a violent series of incidents that began with a pair of carjackings in Canton and ended with a shootout with state troopers. Troopers found Ali Farris, 56, following an exchange of gunfire with Michigan State troopers in Detroit.
Farris was found dead at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday near Bradford and Flanders streets in Detroit, Michigan State Police said in a statement. Police said troopers initially tried to stop Farris with non-lethal methods. He was found dead after the exchange of gunshots.
Farris apparently had been released from jail on Monday, where he had been held on charges of felonious assault and malicious destruction of property, reported WXYZ-TV.

Farris' death ended a nearly 10-hour string a violence across a 20-mile swath of metro Detroit.
It started at 9 p.m. Tuesday with an attempted carjacking and shooting near the Salvation Army store at Joy and Morton Taylor roads in Canton. The female victim is in good condition, police reported. A few minutes later, at 9:05 p.m., there was a reported home invasion attempt with shots fired.

There were no injuries in that incident. A second home invasion and carjacking in Canton at 9:15 p.m. The victim, a woman, is in good condition, police said.
Police tracked Farris to the Northville area in the stolen vehicle. Farris refused to stop, crashed the car and then fled on foot. Farris carjacked another car and kidnapped a woman in Northville Township. He freed the victim in Highland Park, and she is reportedly in good condition.
At 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Farris attempted yet another carjacking in the city of Detroit, though the victim was an undercover Michigan State Trooper. During the altercation, Farris exchanged gunfire with the trooper.
Police said no police officers were injured in the string of incidents. The case remains under investigation. The troopers involved in Farris' death have been placed on administrative while the incident is reviewed.
