Possible Tornado Touches Down in Canton

Buildings and vehicles were damaged; a National Weather Service expert will assess the situation Thursday.


CANTON, MI – High winds Wednesday night damaged several buildings and cars in Canton Township, suggesting a tornado, but that won’t be confirmed until a National Weather Service specialist reviews the area Thursday.

Canton Fire Chief Joshua Meier told the Detroit Free Press no injuries were reported, but two vehicles, three commercial or industrial buildings, and other structures were damaged by the high winds around 6:45 p.m. Damage was concentrated on Lilley Road between Warren and Joy.

A low-pressure system moved through the Great Lakes area Wednesday.

Dan Thompson, a meteorologist with the NWS, said a barn near Deerfield was also damaged in the storm. Damage was reported in Lenawee County as well.

Canton wasn’t under a tornado warning when the winds kicked up, but the weather service had issued a severe weather statement earlier in the day that suggested an isolated tornado might be possible.
