Rio 2016 Olympic Games: Canton Native Wins Silver

Swimmer Allison Schmitt picked up a silver medal with the 4x100 in the preliminary heat.

CANTON, MI — Canton native Allison Schmitt, already a six-time Olympic medal winner, picked up her seventh in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with Team USA’s silver medal performance in the 4x100 Saturday.

Schmitt and another Georgia swimmer, Amanda Weir, earned silver medals in the preliminary heat and did not swim in the final The team, which included superstar Katie Ledecky and Lia Neal, posted the second fastest time of the morning.

The Americans finished second behind Australia’s record-setting performance.

Schmitt, a 2008 graduate of Canton High School, is a 2013 graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in psychology. She is the daughter of Ralph and Gail Schmitt.

In the London 2012 Olympic games she won three gold medals (200m free, 4x200m free, 4x100m medley); a silver medal (400m free) and a bronze medal (4x100m free).

She also won a bronze medal in the Beijing 2008 olympic games in the 4x200m freestyle and placed ninth in the 200m freestyle.
