Washtenaw Deputy Released From Hospital After Being Shot: MSP

A Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputy who was shot during the early stages of the standoff has been released from the hospital, MSP said.

SUPERIOR TWP., MI — A nine-hour standoff in between a gunman and Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies ended late Wednesday night after authorities said they found the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police identified the man as Nathan Kurt Hardenburg from Ypsilanti.

The standoff took place in a subdivision near Berkshire and Prospect in Superior Township, where authorities said they responded around 2:11 p.m. Wednesday after a dispute between a man and a lawn maintenance worker prompted one man to begin shooting a gun at another.

A spokesperson with the sheriff's office said Wednesday that when deputies arrived they immediately took gunfire from the suspect, with one deputy being struck, the sheriff's office said. He was in stable condition Wednesday evening.

"Fortunately our deputy is alive," Derrick Jackson, the department's spokesperson said at the time. "We're a pretty safe county, pretty safe community, but what officers do every day is put their lives on the line."

The sheriff's office asked residents in the area bordered by North Prospect Road, Geddes Road, East Clark Road and North Harris to stay indoors due to the active police situation.

There are no reports of any other injuries or any hostages being involved in the incident.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the crime scene.
