ROYAL OAK, MI — It smells like festival food and lights dazzle across unique creations of art. Art fair season has officially started Thursday with the first day of the Royal Oak Market: Spring Art Fair. Hosted by the Guild of Artists & Artisans, the fair includes jewelry, sculptures, works of metal, glass and wood, clothing, pottery and more, from 75 different artists across four states. There's also beer, wine, entertainment and food.

The event runs noon to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday and is free and open to the public. Parking is also free for the event.

Fairs-goers slowly trickled in Thursday afternoon, meeting and greeting with the artists on hand, and picking out unique treasures to take home.

“There’s a lot of interesting things,” said Janine Anderson, of Royal Oak, holding her new floral sculpture made of metal. “A lot of talent represented here.”

Guild Director Karen Delhey said that’s one of the appeals of art fairs.

“Art fairs offer the opportunity to see as much work as possible in a short amount of time,” said Delhey. “They provide a great opportunity to look at amazing art and talk to the artists directly.”

Featured work includes sculptures from Ohio-based artist Richard Morgan, ceramics from local artist Linda Buck of Berkley and metals from Robert McPherson of Huntington Woods. Maps are handed out at the entrance, denoting each artist's booth and where they are from.

The Royal Oak Farmers Market is located at 316 E. Eleven Mile Road.
