Fatal 2018 Shelby Township Police Shooting Will Be Reviewed By AG

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has agreed to review a 2018 case in which her office said an unarmed Macomb County man was killed by Shelby Township police and will evaluate whether charges should have been filed against law enforcement involved in the incident.

Kanwarbir Malhi, 25, was shot by officers from the Shelby Township Police Department after exiting a car in the parking lot of the apartment complex where he resided along Spring Lane in Shelby Township, Nessel's office said. Authorities said he refused to comply with their orders and they believed he may have possessed a weapon. Authorities later determined Malhi was unarmed.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office reviewed the incident and presented its investigation to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, but prosecutors did not file charges against the officers involved in the shooting.

“In light of recent inquiries into our investigation, we welcome the Attorney General’s office to review our investigation, facts and findings that were presented to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office,” Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said. “We will provide the Attorney General’s office anything they need as we remain open and transparent.”

Nessel agreed to review the case, saying her office would provide transparency and an unbiased look at the matter.

“As Attorney General I have consistently advocated for a thorough, comprehensive and objective review of all officer-involved shootings, particularly those which result in fatalities,” Nessel said. “This matter will receive an exhaustive review and analysis with an impartial lens and, when completed, our department is committed to transparency in our decision-making process, irrespective of the outcome. Justice demands nothing less.”
