Rep. Lucido demands DEQ take action to clean up Lake St. Clair

State Rep. Peter Lucido is demanding the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality take immediate action to clean up the waste and raw sewage found in Lake St. Clair.

“Lake St. Clair is much too beautiful to become our state’s largest cesspool,” said Lucido, of Shelby Township. “Our state is supposed to be “Pure Michigan,” but what we have right now on the shores of Lake St. Clair is purely disgusting. There is a clear and present health risk to nearby families and residents. The beaches are lined with sewage, hazardous waste, trash and dead fish. It’s absolutely revolting that the DEQ hasn’t done anything to address these problems.”

On Friday, Lucido hosted a roundtable discussion about the problem with other lawmakers and representatives from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Army Corps of Engineers.

“This has been going on for years and the DEQ still hasn’t done anything about it. It’s ridiculous,” Lucido said. “It’s time to clean up the lake and take action to prevent municipal sewer systems from discharging raw sewage into the Clinton River and Lake St. Clair.

Lucido said he wants the DEQ to provide a viable plan of action for cleaning up Lake St. Clair within two weeks of the meeting.
