Tigers Trade Slugger Prince Fielder To Texas

The Detroit Tigers traded first basemen, five-time All-Star Price Fielder to Texas Wednesday night for second baseman Ian Kinsler, pending physicals for both players. 

Detroit agreed to pay the Rangers $30 million as part of the deal, CBSSports.com said. 

The trade – which comes nearly a week after Tigers right-handed Max Scherzer was named 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner – could give the franchise more spending flexibility. Scherzer has a year left on his contract before he can become a free agent. 

Before the 2012 season, Fiedler signed a $214 million, nine-year contract with a limited no-trade provision. Fielder is due $168 million through 2020, a salary of $24 million per season.

Kinsler is in the second year of his $75 million, five-year contract, and is guaranteed $62 million through 2017. 

Fielder, 29, hit .279 with only 25 home runs this season, his lowest in a full season.

Kinsler, 31, hit .277 with 13 homers, but was limited to 136 games due to injury.
