Cops Cleared In Fatal Shooting Of Man Who Killed K9 Officer Axe

The St. Clair Shores shooting left 29-year-old Theoddeus Gray dead after he reportedly shot and killed police K-9 Axe with a handgun.

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — Macomb County police have cleared the St. Clair Shores police officers in the fatal shooting of a man they say killed their K-9 Officer Axe.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office Wednesday morning released the results of an investigation into a shooting, including photographs and video from that night.

The shooting happened before 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4 outside the Lakeland Manor Banquet Hall on Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores where Theoddeus Gray, 29, of Detroit, and his girlfriend, were there for their baby shower for their first child together.

Someone called 911 and told police there was a man outside with a gun.When police arrived Gray was outside and authorities said he matched the suspect description of the man with the gun. Police say Gray tried to flee, prompting them to deploy Axe to apprehend him.

Police said that’s when Gray opened fire on the the K-9 Axe and officers returned fire, killing Gray.

According to the medical examiner’s office, Gray died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Axe, who had been on the force since 2016, was also pronounced dead that night. A memorial service was held Nov. 14 complete with bagpipes and a ceremony of whimpering fellow K-9 dogs.
