20 Oakland County Schools Added To Coronavirus Outbreak List

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI — New outbreaks of the coronavirus have been reported in 20 schools in Oakland County, according to the most recent COVID-19 outbreak data released Monday by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

In all, 71 schools were added to Michigan's list of ongoing coronavirus outbreaks Monday.

Here are the Oakland County schools that were added to the Michigan list of COVID-19 outbreaks in schools Monday:

• Troy Schools (Troy High and Athens High), 2 students
• Teddy Bear's Playhouse, 2 students
• Riverside Elementary, 14 people
• Oakside Scholars Academy, 2 students
• Clifford Smart Middle School, 3 students
• Clarkston HS, 2 students
• Lakeville Elementary, 2 students
• Oxford HS, 3 students
• Clarkston Jr High., 2 students
• Webber Elementary, 2 students
• Clarkston Jr High, 3 students
• Lake Orion High School, 2 students
• North Sashabaw Elementary (Clarkston), 2 students
• Daniel Axford Elementary, 2 students
• Schoolhouse Montessori (Troy), 2 students
• Harlan Elementary, 2 students
• Upton Elementary, 2 students
• Harlan Elementary, 2 students
• Harlan Elementary, 6 students
• Seaholm High School, 2 students

It's important to note that a coronavirus outbreak is different than a case. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.

The information provided by the state on Monday includes K-12, college and university school name, address, number of cases and if the cases involved staff, students or both. Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.

Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks, MDHHS said. This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.
