12-Year-Old Dies After Being Struck by Car on Coolidge

The boy was believed to have run away from home earlier Saturday before he ran into traffic, Troy police say. No charges are expected against driver.

The 12-year-old boy from Troy who was hit by a car Saturday on Coolidge Highway has died, police said Sunday evening.

The boy ran into traffic around 6 p.m. on Coolidge between Glouchester and Golfview when the driver struck him in the southbound lanes, Troy Police spokesman Andi Breidenich said.

On Saturday night, the boy was listed in serious condition at in Royal Oak, and he later died.

Breidenich said the driver likely won't face any charges.

"From our initial investigation, it doesn't appear there was any fault upon the driver," Breidenich said. "The kid just ran out into the street."

Shortly before the accident, the boy's parents had notified police that their son ran away from home, Breidenich said.

Traffic on Coolidge Highway south of Big Beaver Road was blocked for two to three hours Saturday evening while police investigated the scene.
