Council Votes To Allow Fireworks At Mon Jin Lau Restaurant

Troy City Council votes to allow fireworks display for Chinese New Year.

At this week’s Troy City Council meeting on Monday, Feb. 5, the body voted to approve a fireworks permit for Brandon Chin, one of the owners of Mon Jin Lau Restaurant, 1515 E. Maple Road, Troy. The permit will allow Chin to put on a fireworks show for the restaurant’s annual celebration of the Chinese New Year Sunday, Feb. 18. The permit’s terms require Chin to agree to Troy’s hold harmless agreement and to offer proof that the City of Troy has been named as an additional insured on the the restaurant’s general insurance policy, according to meeting minutes.

To ensure event safety, city council has directed the Troy Fire Department to inspect the fireworks Chin plans to display before the event, and to review the proposed discharge location and site, allowing the department to guarantee compliance with the fire code and with standards for fireworks displays.

Mon Jin Lau opened in 1969 and was named an Hour restaurant of the year in 2009.
