TROY, MI — A 28-year-old Oakland Township man was killed Tuesday evening as he tried to walk across the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 near 14 Mile Road, according to Troy Police Sgt. Meghan Lehman. The man, Nicholas Smith had stopped his car on the northbound side of the freeway before walking across the highway, she said.

A 50-year old woman from Waterford Township hit Smith. She stopped and tried to help Smith, Lehman said. She is not likely to face any charges, Lehman added.

The incident occurred at 9:40 p.m. Lehman said the case is under investigation and it’s unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
