Students and staff run to raise money for the school Friday in Martell Elementary's biggest fundraiser of the year.
For the seventh year in a row, students at Martell Elementary School traded their pencils for running shoes Friday during the school's annual Fun Run – Martell's biggest fundraiser of the year.
"We're hoping to go over $20,000 this year," Martell Principal Charles Lesser said. The money will be used for smart boards, other classroom technology, field trips, classroom supplies and more, he said.
"The fun run is 100 percent involvement," Lesser added. "Everyone participates. ... It's fun seeing everyone coming together like this."

Starting at 8:30 a.m. Friday and ending just after 2 p.m., the Fun Run fundraiser gave each class at Martell the opportunity to run for about half an hour. Students usually raise an average of $50 each through the fun run.
"We love our school, and we love this fundraiser," PTO President Rachel Huebner said, adding that planning for the run starts in August and involves many parent volunteers.
