'Go, Wings!' – Red Wings School Assembly Program Visits Bemis Elementary

On Friday afternoon, excited students at Bemis Elementary School crowded into the school's gymnasium to receive a special visit from the Red Wings School Assembly Program – a street and floor hockey initiative that introduces students to the sport of hockey and encourages a healthy lifestyle.

The Detroit Red Wings Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Kroger Company of Michigan have partnered to bring the Red Wings School Assembly Program to 115 elementary schools during the 2012-13 season. During each visit, the school assembly team opens the program with a lesson on exercise and healthy eating tips, followed by a fun face-off between teachers and students during a hockey shootout competition. 

“We’re just hoping to continue on with the promotion of healthy living and getting the kids excited about our jog-a-thon and connecting it to what the Red Wings do in their profession, which is healthy living, also," Bemis Principal Jeremy Whan said Wednesday. "You can have fun and be healthy at the same time.”
