Representative Howrylak introduces legislation to create qualifications for Natural Resources Commission appointees

State Representative Martin Howrylak introduced legislation this week to modify the process for appointments to the Natural Resources Commission (NRC).
House Bill 5225 proposes baseline requirements for the individuals nominated by the governor. The bill would require a general knowledge of the fish and wildlife population in Michigan. It also states a member of the Natural Resources Committee cannot hold another state, county or municipal elected or appointed office.
“The mandate of The Natural Resources Commission was dramatically expanded in 1996 with exclusive authority to regulate the taking of game. It is important that those who oversee our natural resources and game species have a background germane to their duties,” said Howrylak, R-Troy.

“Currently, the appointment of members to Michigan’s NRC simply requires submission by the governor. There are no base level qualifications and no requirements for members to be hunters, fishers, researchers or have any scientific or wildlife background. Sound science is required for proper wildlife management. This proposal clarifies member qualification, balances relevant interests and will help ensure sustainability of our state’s natural resources.”
HB 5225 has been referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources for consideration.
