Road Commission to Test New Road Paint on Livernois

The new paint, supplied by Troy's PK Contracting, is expected to last up to five times longer than traditional road marking paint.

The following information was provided by the Craig Bryson/Road Commission for Oakland County.

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) is partnering with Troy-based PK Contracting to test a new, long-lasting road marking paint on the newly-resurfaced section of Livernois Road from just north of Big Beaver Road to just north of Wattles Road in Troy.

PK crews will remove the existing pavement markings on this section of Livernois next Wednesday, Oct. 24 and apply the new pavement marking paint. The work will involve lane closures during that day.

The work is being paid for entirely by PK Contracting as a test of the new product.

“PK Contracting believes this product will last three to five times longer than traditional pavement markings, which generally last about a year,” RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar said. He added the new paint is also expected to have a higher level of reflectivity and the reflectivity is expected to last longer than traditional markings.

“This could potentially provide a cost savings in the future, if we only have to replace the markings once every three-to-five years as opposed to every year,” Kolar said. “It would also reduce the frequency with which we have to disrupt traffic to restripe the road.” He noted RCOC and PK Contracting will both monitor the location over the next several years to see how the paint performs.

Motorists should expect traffic delays on next Wednesday while the new markings are installed.
